Protecting your dog's paws in wet fall weather

As fall brings cooler temperatures and more rain, your dog’s paws face new challenges. Wet sidewalks, muddy trails, and chilly conditions can cause discomfort or even injury if you’re not careful. You might notice cracked pads, irritation, or slipping during walks.

Taking care of your dog's paws during this time is easier than you think. Simple steps can protect them from harsh conditions and keep your walks enjoyable. You don’t need fancy gear or complicated routines—just some focused care.

Check your dog’s paws regularly

Make it a habit to look at your dog’s paws after every walk. Look for cuts, cracks, redness, or anything unusual. Small debris like twigs, seeds, or tiny stones can get stuck between the toes. Removing these quickly prevents irritation.

Also, check the pads for dryness or cracking. Fall weather can dry out skin just like it does for people. If you notice dryness, moisturizing pads with a vet-approved balm can help.

Use protective paw wear when needed

Boots or socks made for dogs are great for wet or muddy conditions. They keep paws dry and protect against sharp objects or rough surfaces. If you’re new to dog boots, it might take some time for your dog to get used to them. Introduce them slowly during calm indoor times.

Opt for boots with good grip to prevent slipping on slick pavement. If your dog won’t tolerate boots, regular paw wax can add a protective barrier against moisture and rough ground.

Keep nails trimmed and fur tidy

Long nails can cause your dog to slip, especially on wet surfaces. Regular nail trimming improves traction and reduces injury risk. If you’re unsure how to trim nails safely, ask your vet or a groomer.

Also, check the fur between the toes. Excess fur can trap mud and wetness, leading to irritation. Trimming this fur keeps paws cleaner and drier.

Clean and dry paws after walks

After coming inside, gently wipe your dog’s paws with a soft, absorbent cloth. This removes mud, chemicals like road salt or de-icers, and prevents your dog from licking harmful substances.

Make sure paws are completely dry before your dog rests. Damp paws are more prone to fungal infections and irritation.

Watch for signs of discomfort or infection

If your dog limps, licks paws excessively, or shows redness, it might be a sign of injury or infection. Don’t try home remedies without advice. Contact your veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

By paying close attention and protecting your dog’s paws, you can enjoy cozy fall adventures together without worry. These small steps help your dog stay comfortable, safe, and ready for whatever the season brings.
